Lawrence Road Median Beautification Project

Project Limits Lawrence Road from Gateway Blvd. to Hypoluxo Road

Overview

This website serves as the central hub for project information, updates, and community engagement. It provides a clear overview of the planned improvements, design concepts, and project timeline as the City of Boynton Beach works to enhance this corridor.

About the Project

Lawrence Road is a Palm Beach County roadway approximately 2.4 miles long, extending from Gateway Boulevard to Hypoluxo Road. It is a four-lane corridor with a center turn lane, providing an important connection between neighborhoods and major roads. Currently, the roadway has minimal shade and no landscaping. The Lawrence Road Streetscape Beautification Project will enhance the existing medians with sustainable, low-maintenance plantings to create a greener, safer, and more welcoming corridor for the community.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Resident participation is a vital part of this project. Through the Lawrence Road Renewal campaign, residents will have opportunities to:

● Attend a public meeting located at Citrus Cove Elementary to review design concepts
●  Complete online surveys
●  Stay informed through website and newsletter updates

Project Scope

The project includes surveying for topographic mapping, landscape architecture for new and extended medians with public-ready renderings, and electrical engineering for accent lighting. Civil engineering will address roadway signage, markings, and access improvements, while public engagement will gather feedback through meetings, surveys, and newsletters.

Who is Involved

The City of Boynton Beach leads the project with Palm Beach County as the right-of-way partner. Craven Thompson provides engineering and design, DDEC handles outreach and branding, Quantum manages lighting design, and Masuen Consulting oversees irrigation.

Why This Project is Needed

Lawrence Road’s medians and sidewalks have aging landscaping, narrow strips, and outdated driveway cuts that make the corridor less safe and inviting. A landscape renewal will unify the look, improve safety, and better reflect the community’s identity.

Purpose of the Project

The project will refresh medians with new landscaping, lighting, and pedestrian features that showcase Boynton Beach’s character. Improvements include safer sidewalks, drought-tolerant plantings, and enhanced lighting for a welcoming, sustainable corridor.

Existing Conditions

Corridor Characteristics:

  • 80-foot right-of-way
  • 4-lane undivided roadway from Woolbright Rd. to 2nd Ave.
  • 5-lanes with center turn lane from 2nd Ave. to Boynton Beach Blvd.

Traffic:

  • Traffic volumes (12,400 vehicles per day).

Safety Analysis:

  • Frequent angle and turning-related crashes, particularly at NE 1st Avenue and Ocean Avenue.
  • Insufficient pedestrian crossings and bicycle facilities.

Multimodal Assessment:

  • Lack of dedicated bicycle lanes and inconsistent sidewalks.
  • Limited transit amenities and accessibility.

Infrastructure Conditions:

  • Pavement deterioration, localized flooding, utility conflicts, and inadequate lighting.
