Safer Streets for Opa- Locka

ZERO TRAFFIC DEATHS

Continue with Vision Zero efforts to eliminate all crashes and serious injuries in the City of Opa-locka. This month, the project team focused on Route 27 transit safety. This initiative, called the “Let’s Take the Bus” challenge, was conducted through a workshop format. The goal is to educate the public and decision-makers on the frequency of crashes along NW 27th Ave., particularly near bus stops.

The workshop began at Miami-Dade College, working together with non-profit organizations such as Transit Alliance Miami, Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works, Miami-Dade Transit, and other stakeholders involved in Opa-locka’s Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. Split into two groups, participants boarded the Route 27 Bus on the route to NW 27 Avenue. Group One focused on the segment south of Opa-locka Blvd., while Group 2 focused on the area north of Opa-locka Blvd. The project team used ArcGIS/Survey123 as a tool for data collection, geographically pinpointing comments and concerns while conducting this workshop.

As a result, the data was formulated with the consensus that the ingress to bus stops, alongside their upkeep, needs enhancement. This is a challenge commuters face daily, particularly those reliant on public transit for their daily work journeys.
