Opa-locka is working hard to make our streets safer for everyone. Our goal? Zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads by 2030. This plan is called “Vision Zero.” Let’s look at why this is so important.
The Big Picture
- Only 2% of crashes involve people walking or biking
- But these crashes cause 25.2% of serious injuries and deaths
- This means walkers and bikers are at much higher risk
Who’s Most at Risk?
- People in cars: 60.5% of serious crashes
- People walking: 22.7% of serious crashes
- People on motorcycles: 14.3% of serious crashes
- People on bicycles: 3.4% of serious crashes
Where Do Dangerous Crashes Happen?
- 75.6% of bad crashes happen on big, multi-lane roads
- These roads are only 27.8% of all our streets
- 71% of serious crashes happen where speed limits are over 30 mph
What Causes These Crashes?
- For people walking: 41% are hit in crosswalks or on sidewalks
- For people biking: In 50% of crashes, the biker did nothing wrong
- For motorcycles: 35.3% involve a car making a left turn
How Can We Fix This?
- Make safer street crossings
- Build protected bike lanes
- Slow down cars in busy areas
- Teach drivers to share the road safely
Why This Matters
Even one death on our roads is too many. Vision Zero will make Opa-locka safer for everyone – whether you walk, bike, drive, or ride a motorcycle.
