Safer Streets for Opa- Locka

ZERO TRAFFIC DEATHS

In spirit of Rail Safety Week and Park(ing) Day, the City of Opa-locka hosted the third pop-up bicycle repair station on October 3rd, 2024, at the Opa-locka Tri-Rail Station. Several organizations, including the City of Opa-locka, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA), Miami-Dade County Department of Public Works, and Epik Ridez Bikes collaborated in making this event possible.

The event coincided with other celebrations of Rail Safety week across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. Rail safety is paramount when it comes to transportation, and we made sure to partake in our responsibility of delivering the resources to decrease crashes and increase safety in commuters’ lives. Rail Safety Week is an effort to remind commuters that crossing or trespassing the train racks is dangerous and that we collectively can prevent tragedies around trains and railroad tracks.

During our event, public reception exceeded expectations, once again, and resulted in over 50 Rail Safety Backpacks being distributed!  Additionally, several bicycles were repaired thanks to Epik Ridez Bikes, a local bicycle shop. As simple as a bicycle tune-up may be, it can have a significant impact on the commuting experience and positively impact overall quality and safety of transportation.

Furthermore, the SFRTA and Miami-Dade County officials actively engaged with commuters in promoting sustainable transportation. Safety gadgets, water, and other amenities were provided to commuters as they headed home, as a token of appreciation from Vision Zero, the City of Opa-locka, and Miami-Dade County.
