As part of its commitment to eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, Vision Zero Palm Springs has conducted a comprehensive safety analysis of the village’s road network. The results are in, and they’re shedding light on where safety improvements are needed most urgently.
The analysis has revealed a High Injury Network (HIN) – a set of streets where the vast majority of serious and fatal crashes occur. Shockingly, 97% of fatal crashes and 95% of serious injury crashes in the past decade happened on these high-risk roads.
Key findings from the safety analysis include:
- 65% of fatal crashes occur at night, highlighting the need for improved lighting and nighttime safety measures.
- 88% of serious crashes happen at intersections or during nighttime hours.
- One out of every four pedestrian crashes results in a fatality, emphasizing the vulnerability of those on foot.
- Roads with speed limits of 35 mph or higher are particularly dangerous, accounting for a disproportionate number of serious crashes.
Vision Zero Palm Springs is using this data to prioritize improvements where they’re needed most. By focusing on the High Injury Network, the initiative aims to make the biggest impact in the shortest time.
The message is clear: these aren’t just statistics – they represent real lives lost or forever changed. Vision Zero Palm Springs is committed to transforming our most dangerous streets into safe corridors for all road users.
