Safer Streets for Opa- Locka

ZERO TRAFFIC DEATHS

The City of Boynton Beach kickoff the Seacrest Plan with a comprehensive site visit to the corridor from Gateway Boulevard to Boynton Beach Boulevard on April 9th. Team members walked the entire route to experience firsthand the challenges facing pedestrians in this important Boynton Beach thoroughfare.

Our team documented numerous broken sidewalks creating hazards for pedestrians throughout the corridor. Utility poles and overgrown landscaping further obstructed walkable paths in multiple locations, forcing pedestrians into dangerous situations.

The team observed significant midblock crossing behavior, indicating that current infrastructure doesn't align with natural pedestrian movement patterns. E-scooters and bicycles were frequently seen using sidewalks instead of roadways, creating potential conflicts in already compromised spaces.

The Florida heat proved particularly challenging during the assessment, with the corridor's lack of shade making walking uncomfortable. The absence of tree canopy or shade structures was identified as a major barrier to walkability in Boynton Beach's climate.

Our team will use these direct observations to develop targeted recommendations for creating a more accessible, comfortable corridor. The Seacrest Plan will prioritize improvements addressing the documented infrastructure deficiencies, with public workshops scheduled for late April to gather additional community input.
